East Lansing
A resident of East Lansing for 61 years, she passed on Sept 15 at the age of 92. Betty was born in Beloit, WI to Joseph and Ina (Millar) Rice. She graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, married husband Dr. Rolland T. Hinkle and settled at Cornell University for 10 years. Upon returning to E.L. in 1949, Betty became active in her community by her involvement in Peoples Church as an Elder, Sunday school teacher, bizarre chairman and also was a 4-H sewing teacher. Betty was an avid golfer and bowler. As a Spartan fan, her involvement included MSU family clubs, E.L. Women’s Club, founding member of the University Club at MSU, Inner Circle Group with the Wharton Center for Performing Arts and was a 20 year volunteer at Sparrow Hospital. A lifetime of fashion modeling and playing bridge continued into her 90’s. Betty is survived by her son Stephen and daughter Nancy Gillespie, both of E.L. and daughter Jane Gibson of Tulsa, OK. “Grammy” will be lovingly remembered by her 5 grand children and 5 great-grand children and her multitude of friends. A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 24, 11:00 a.m. at Peoples Church, 200 W. Grand River, E.L. The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman East Lansing.
