

He was born in Lansing to Marvin "Vic" and Crystal (Holmes) Federau in 1935 and graduated from Eastern High School in 1953. Doug attended Taft Community College in Taft, CA, Ferris State College and Michigan State University.
Founder of Okemos Agency, Independent Insurance Center and The Federau Group, Doug bought and managed several insurance agencies over a 48 year career and was active in numerous professional organizations. He served as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Michigan and lectured on a variety of insurance topics at conventions and workshops nationwide. He also served on the advisory councils of several insurance companies and was elected to the Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame.
Many community organizations benefited from Doug's time and service as president, officer or member including Okemos/Haslett Rotary (president), Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts and Okemos "Oaks." He served for 12 years as a trustee of Meridian Charter Township.
In 2010 he was elected to the Board of Trustees of Olivet College where he often taught as a visiting instructor, served on several committees and mentored a number of business insurance students. Olivet College awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 2016 and Emeritus status the following year.
Doug is survived by his wife of 33 years, Beverly Farrar Federau of East Lansing, his six children and their mother, Connie Wickens: Douglas Marc (Deborah) Federau of Okemos, Kimberly (Brian) Beck of Okemos, Michael Federau (Curtis Mellon) of Punta Gorda, FL, Karyn (Mike) Downey of Mountain City, TN, Kristen (Dave)Wright of Mason, and Matthew Federau of Knoxville, TN., and by stepchildren Bruce (Anita) Farrar of Okemos and Michelle Farrar Freed of Lansing. He was predeceased by a sister, Jean Christie Leibel, and brothers, Richard and David.He is survived by brother Ric (Nanci) Federau of Higgins Lake.
Doug took great pleasure in the company of his 14 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren: Douglas Andrew (Kirsten) Federau, Erin (Rick) Hollowood, Gabrielle (Matt) Wiser, Brian J. (Lauren) Beck, Kacie Beck, Amanda (Brian) Davarn, Joseph Johnson, Austin Federau, Dustin Lundberg, Adam (Emily) Federau, Hannah, Alex, Gabriel and Preston Federau, Heather and Valerie Freed, and his 13 great-grandchildren.
Doug appreciated every minute of life. He was an enthusiastic hunter, fisherman, pilot, traveler, Spartan sports fan and grandfather. His special pleasure was spending time with family and friends at his "up north" cottage in Cross Village, Michigan where he served as a trustee of Redpath Memorial Church for many years.
