Doris was born at home in Grand Ledge, Michigan on December 20, 1936, the daughter of George Smith and Dorothy (Wood) Smith.
She leaves to cherish her memory her siblings, Keith Smith, Eileen Pittman, and Margaret Leslie; her children, Richard, Mark, Roger, Tim, Karen, and Keith Burch. She will be forever remembered by her grandchildren, Casey, Cody, Christopher, Amanda, Tara, Sara, John, Andrew, Ray, Donna, Deanna, Joanna, and Leanna; and her great-grandchildren, Levi,Daffeny, Joshua, Hanna, Link, Tera, Annabella, Moses, Titus, Madison, Ariel, Kinsley, and Penelope, arriving in a few weeks.
Doris had a full life and was cherished by many. She had a big heart and was very giving. She spent many years hoping to make people happy, crocheting what she called “Happy Feet Slippers” for family and friends, even doctors and nurses and people she barely knew. She was always up for the challenge of a good table game or shuffleboard at the American Legion., and bingo and euchre at the Grange Acres Community Center.
We are forever grateful to Roger Burch who stayed by her side and spoiled her in her final years.
If she could speak to us now, she would say this:
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on repined grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there,
I did not die.
