The Honorable Judge Dennis W. Mack, 63, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2022 at McLaren Flint Hospital under the devoted attention of his family and compassionate life-saving efforts by medical staff.
Dennis was born March 6, 1959 in Alpena, Michigan to John J. and Eleanor Mack.
On December 2, 1989, Dennis married Rebecca (Barich) and the couple began their happy life together in Minneapolis, MN. They eventually relocated to Okemos, their home since 1994, where they raised their two wonderful daughters.
Dennis graduated from Michigan State University College of Law and embarked on a 27-year career with the State of Michigan as an Administrative Law Judge. He regularly volunteered his time with the Michigan State University College of Law Moot Court Program, where he enjoyed mentoring students. A public servant and pillar of the community, he applied the same confident humility to his career as to every other area of his life.
Dennis loved his family and is much loved by them. His height made him noticeable in a crowd, but his character and personality are what made him truly stand out. Behind a gruff veneer was a big-hearted man who cared about people in every area of his life– including friends, colleagues, and even strangers on the street needing a couple dollars. Dennis was an avid reader with a sharp and intellectual mind, and he possessed a wealth of knowledge that he shared with those who knew him. He had a sense of humor that made him one of the most likable people anyone had the pleasure of meeting.
He enjoyed swimming regularly with his wife, watching sports with friends, tropical vacations, music of the 60s and 70s, Michigan-grown strawberries, and chocolate malts. To his children, he imparted his guiding values of honesty, justice, and perseverance, and they continue to always be guided by his example.
Left to mourn are his wife Rebecca and his beloved daughters Elizabeth (Ann Arbor) and Cara (East Lansing), and his four siblings, Timothy (Alpena), John Patrick (Petoskey), Michael (Alpena), and Margaret (Tarpon Springs) as well as a large extended family of close relatives. The family is grateful for our friends, neighbors, and professional colleagues and their endless acts of kindness during this difficult time.
Visitation will take place at St. Martha Parish 1100 W. Grand River Avenue, Okemos from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2022. A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. with Father Michael Murray as celebrant. A committal service will be held for Dennis where he will be laid to rest at Glendale Cemetery in Okemos, Michigan at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2022.
