In the early morning on Thursday, December 31, 2020, Brian McVeigh, loving husband, father, and grandfather, entered into eternal life at age 59. After a courageous 14-month battle with brain cancer, Brian’s suffering is now over as he is welcomed into the gates of heaven.
Brian was born on June 12, 1961 to Glenn and Lois McVeigh in Detroit, MI. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Michigan State University in 1983. He met his wife, Kelly, in 1987 and they were married on June 17, 1989, sharing the next 31 years in marriage. They raised two sons, RJ and Luke. He worked in the Credit Union industry for 37 years, with his most recent job being CEO of Adventure Credit Union in Grand Rapids.
Brian spent most of his career as CFO of State Employees Credit Union, which eventually became Lake Trust Credit Union. He was gifted at explaining complex financial situations in a way any person could easily understand. His gentle and mild manner was known to calm even the most agitated circumstances. His abilities made Brian one of the best known and respected CFOs in credit unions on a national basis, and he served as Chairman of a highly regarded national CFO council. Brian volunteered countless hours on the Board of Directors for St. Vincent Catholic Charities and as Chairman of the finance committee for Lansing Catholic High School.
Brian was a devoted husband, father, and friend. Everywhere he went, Brian saw the good in people. One of his greatest passions was mentoring others, especially his two sons. He loved golfing, fishing, hunting, and watching Spartan football and basketball. Brian was an avid blood donor. His favorite music was ‘70s rock, his favorite game was poker, his favorite drink was craft beer or Mountain Dew, his favorite Bible passage was the Parable of the Talents (Mt 25:14-30), and his favorite superhero was Batman. Brian’s most important value was his Catholic faith, followed closely by his commitments to family and education.
Brian is preceded in death by his mother, Lois. He is survived by his father Glenn, his wife Kelly, his sons RJ (Brianna) and Luke (Emily) and his four grandchildren (Arabella, Theodore, James, and Landon). He is also survived by his five siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends whom he loved dearly.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 6th at 11:00 am at St. Martha's Catholic Parish in Okemos, MI with a visitation prior at the church from 10–11am. There will also be a visitation on Tuesday night at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home in East Lansing from 5pm to 8pm. Masks will be required at both events, and social distancing measures will be in place. The family has chosen a church with a large sanctuary to allow for plenty of safe seating so that any of Brian's loved ones who would like to come pay their final respects in person can do so. The family welcomes anyone who is able to attend. For those unable to attend in person, the funeral mass will be live-streamed on the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home — East Lansing Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GorslineRuncimanEastLansing/ The recording will also be saved and available after the event. The family completely understands if anyone does not feel comfortable attending for any reason.
If you would like to make a donation in Brian’s honor, it can be made towards tuition assistance at either Immaculate Heart of Mary School, 3830 Rosemont Ave., Lansing, MI 48910 or St. Martha School, 1100 W. Grand River Ave., Okemos, MI 48864. There will be a charity golf event in Brian’s honor to raise funds for Glioblastoma Cancer Research later in 2021—details will be forthcoming.
