Barbara was born on August 28, 1932, in Defiance Ohio to Virgil and Marjorie Pickering. She lived in Defiance until leaving to study at Kent State University. She met her husband, Bob, at college and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage, until his death in 2014.
Barbara’s wonderful smile embodied her positive spirit. It was this warm smile which enabled her to adjust to five interstate moves in the first 20 years of marriage. It was also a warm welcome to others through her many volunteer activities. She was a generous community volunteer, who believed in sharing her time, gifts and talents.
Barbara shared her strong Faith in leadership positions in The Peoples Church, Church Women United, and the United Methodist Conference. She was a leader for 40 years with the Sparrow Hospital Auxiliary. As a Visitor & Convention Bureau volunteer, she welcomed thousands to the area she loved. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Zeta Alumni, and American Association of University Women. She served on the Burcham Hills Resident Association Board and enjoyed numerous activities.
Surviving Barbara are: her daughter, Becki (Tom) Meyer; son, Bill (Sigrie) Potter; grandchildren, Claire Meyer Kelly, Liina Potter and Rob Potter; brother, Bruce Pickering; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
