Mary A. Downing

passed away Thursday, (August 29, 2024). Mary was born January 15, 1934, in Moate, Co.

Westmeath, Ireland to James and Ellen (Killeen) McCann. Mary and her brother Gene immigrated from Ireland to the US in 1950. She soon met John, fell in love and was married. Mary and John eventually settled in East Hartford, CT, where they chose to raise their family. Mary will be remembered as a devoted wife and Mother. She was a long time parishioner of St.Mary’s Church. Mary is survived by her brother Michael (Ireland), sisters Kitty (Ireland), Nellie (Ireland), and Lilly(England). She is preceded in death by sister Teresa and brothers Gene, Brendan (Lawreen), Buddy, Paddy and Tommy. Mary is survived by her children, Ellen Downing, Kathleen Dermody (Brian), John Downing (Julie), Jerry Downing, Kevin Downing (Erin), and Mary Downing as well as grand-children Kurt Dermody, Jack Downing, Owen Downing and her great-granddaughter, Fallon Dermody. Mary is also survived by sister-in-law, Mary McCann, as well as many nieces and nephews in both the McCann and Downing families.

Funeral Services will be held Friday September 6, from 9am to 10:15am at Newkirk & Whitney

Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave, East Hartford, CT 06108 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial,

11am at St. Mary’s Church, East Hartford. Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery,

Glastonbury.
