John J. Foley, 97, of South Windsor and formerly of West Hartford, peacefully journeyed home with his caring family by his side on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at Manchester Memorial Hospital. John was the loving husband of 55 years of the late Florence (Genlot) Foley. Born in Torrington on August 4, 1921, a son of the late Michael J. and Mary Catherine (Dwyer) Foley, he had resided in West Hartford for many years prior to retiring and living in Ocala, Florida for 15 years and later in Manchester and South Windsor. John was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and enjoyed telling war stories. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and UCONN Pharmacy School. Prior to his retirement John was the former owner and operator for many years of Suffield Pharmacy in Suffield. He was a long-time member of the Suffield Rotary Club and an avid loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox and UCONN Women’s basketball team. John was a talented “handy man” and would enjoy tinkering around his home and making small wood decorations. He also enjoyed gardening, fly fishing and deep sea fishing. Most of all, John was a proud and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
John is survived by three sons, John J. Foley, Jr. and his wife, Shelley, of Apex, NC, Christopher M. Foley and his wife, Paula, of South Windsor, James H. Foley and his wife, Karin, of South Windsor; a daughter, Lynne T. Foley of Manchester; seven special grandchildren, Marissa Foley of New York, NY, Andrew Foley and his wife, Corinna, of Shrewsbury, MA, Kaitlyn Foley of South Windsor, Christopher Foley, Jr. of South Windsor, Kyle Foley of South Windsor, Patrick Foley of South Windsor, and Charlotte Foley of Apex, NC; several nieces, nephews, former customers, and dear friends. Along with his beloved wife and parents, John was predeceased by two grandsons, Matthew Foley and Ryan Foley both of South Windsor; a brother, Donald Foley of Rocky Hill; and a sister, Mary Longo of Lee, MA.
Private funeral service and burial at St. Bernard Cemetery in Tariffville will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
