John Francis Dowd 64, loving husband of Teresa Irene (Lowe) Dowd and longtime resident of Manchester passed away peacefully on July 28, 2011 at their home. He was born Oct. 19, 1946 in Hartford son of the late James Robert and Agnes (Barrett) Dowd. After High School he attended Central Connecticut University and was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War serving two tours and receiving Purple Hearts and numerous service and marksman medals. John loved his New York Yankees, NY Giants and the Hartford Whalers. John worked as a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspector at Barnes Aerospace in Windsor for many years. He was a voracious reader but was known as a hard working quiet, kind and gentle man, who loved helping his son after retirement at Catsup & Mustard.
Along with his wife Teresa he leaves his two sons Kevin Thomas Dowd of Bolton and Brian John Dowd of Manchester: two grandchildren Scout and Sobie Dowd: a brother Robert James Dowd and his wife Terry of Arizona and a sister Jeanne Dowd of West Hartford: an uncle John Dowd of Rhode Island and an aunt Sister Helen Dowd of West Hartford: a sister in law and her husband Renee & David Jones of Manchester: two brother in laws and their wives, Frank & Maureen Lowe of Ellington and Thomas & Deborah Lowe of Coventry: along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday August 2nd at 8:45 am from the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 am in St. Mary Church, 15 Maplewood Ave., both in East Hartford. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Hillstown Cemetery, 180 Hillstown Rd., Manchester. Calling hours will be on Monday August 1st from 5-8p at the funeral home.
