Ellington – J.C. McMeans Jr., age 80, a beloved father, grandfather, and husband of Flora (Russell) McMeans for over 60 years passed away peacefully on September 25th, 2024, at Hartford Hospital after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer with family by his side. J.C., Junior, or Pick, to some was, born October 4th, 1943, in Westfield, Alabama, a coal mining town, to the late Evelyn (Valentine) and J.C. McMeans Sr. J.C. resided in Westfield, Alabama. He graduated from Westfield High School. He made the journey north before settling in Ellington, Connecticut. J.C. worked for Hostess and was a member of the Teamsters Local 559 before retiring in 2004. J.C. married Flora (Russell) in June 1964, and they made their home in Ellington, Connecticut. He was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his charm, sense of humor, work ethic and being a provider for the family. J.C. enjoyed watching sports, fishing, betting on the horses, and going to the casino. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four sons. Kevin McMeans and his wife Brenda of Southington, Connecticut, Patrick McMeans of New Britain, Connecticut, Jeffrey McMeans and his wife, Stephanie of Ellington, Connecticut and Jason McMeans of New Britain, Connecticut. He is also survived by his five siblings. Two brothers, Alvin and Bruce McMeans and three sisters, Shirley (McMeans) Mitchell, Emma (McMeans) Carruth, and Barbara Ann (McMeans) Swift of Bessemer, Alabama. He is also survived by his five loving grandchildren Jordan, Ashley, Justin, Tyler, and Samantha McMeans along with countless nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The McMeans’ family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Hartford Hospital and Fox Hill Rehabilitation staff for their wonderful care and for their many acts of kindness and support during his illness.
Friends may greet J.C.’s family at the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home of East Hartford, 318 Burnside Avenue on Monday, October 7th. Visitation hours will be from 4-6:30pm with a brief funeral service from 6:30-7pm.
