Rita M. Danahy, who began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in the West Falls area more than 70 years ago, died Oct. 24 in Sarasota, Fla., where she relocated three years ago. She was 96.

Formerly of West Seneca, Mrs. Danahy was born in Buffalo. She was a graduate of South Park High School and Buffalo State Teachers College, now Buffalo State College, where she earned a degree in education. Her first job as a teacher was in a one-room schoolhouse, at which she taught students in various grade levels simultaneously. She put her career on hold in order to raise a family after her marriage to Raymond Danahy on May 7, 1941. He died in 1990.

Mrs. Danahy resumed her teaching career in the 1970s, when she was hired as a kindergarten teacher in the West Seneca School District. She retired in 1980. She was a member of the Parent-Teacher Association at St. Bonaventure Elementary School and a member of the Mothers Club at Bishop Timon High School.

Mrs. Danahy is survived by six sons, Paul, Daniel, John, Tom, Terry and James, and a daughter, Mary Pat Morrison.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Saturday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court at Maple Road, Amherst.
