Peter Carbone of East Amherst died Aug. 7 at Hospice of Western New York, following a long illness. He was 83.
A graduate of Canisius High School, Mr. Carbone served four years in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Alaska at a Strategic Air Command base. There he also played and officiated basketball for Air Force teams while in the service.
Following his service he worked various positions in refrigeration and air conditioning fields, and also spent time at Sterling Chemical. He retired from Shaefer Plumbing where he spent 25 years as a company officer.
Mr. Carbone was active in refereeing basketball and soccer in the Buffalo area and held the office of treasurer in the Basketball Officials Association. He was active in the spring conferences and was co-chair on the 2002 National Spring Seminar. Through the Western New York Board he was the recipient of the Nostrant-Schlee award for service and dedication.
He was an avid golfer.
Mr. Carbone is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Carmela Carbone; a son Paul; two daughters Patricia and Linda Wilson and six grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Pius X, 1700 North French, Amherst.
