William “Windley” Pope age 85 of Dunn, went to his heavenly home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Windley was born on November 25, 1937, in Harnett County to the late Rosa Lucas & Clifford Pope.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Scott Pope, sisters Maeline West, Nancy Turlington, Carolyn Lee, Jean Ryals, and brother Paul Pope.
Windley worked at Fort Bragg for many years and retired in 1999 after thirty-six years of service. After retirement, he spent the rest of his time working in carpentry, building, and remodeling, which was one of his favorite skills he acquired early in life as a young man.
Other than spending quality time with his beloved wife and family, he loved serving the Lord and attending church, where he was a lifetime member. He served as a deacon for forty-six years and always had a great love for his church family. Reading the Bible daily was one of his favorite things to do. He enjoyed gazing at the beauty of God’s creation and would often say, “How could anyone not believe?”
Windley is remembered most for his humorous personality and the love he had for everyone. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
He was survived by the love of his life Peggy Kirby Pope, wife of sixty-five years, and his children son David Pope (Teresa) of Dunn, Anita Toohey (Joseph) of Calabash, Betty Kirchman (Cornel) of Durham, and Patricia Canady of Dunn. He is also survived by his sisters Judy Johnson and Laura King, both of Erwin, and his grandchildren Garett Pope (Kim), Summer Faith Causey, Jared Kirchman, Justin Kirchman, Lindsey Canady, Ashley Hill (Troy), two great-grandchildren, Trevor and Riley Pope along with, several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to share a word of thanks for your prayers, visits, and all of the other acts of love you have expressed. Each of you holds a special place in our hearts.
