Matthew Jonathan Gainey, of Siler City, formally of Erwin, entered into rest on January 17th, 2019 being 20 years of age. He was born in Cumberland County on April 28th, 1998 the son of Jonathan Gainey and Angela Lee. Matthew was preceded in death by the following members of his family: A brother: Michael Caleb Scholl; Maternal Grandfather: Larry Roger Wilkes; Maternal Grandmother: Jackie Honeycutt; Paternal Grandfather: Clayton Gainey; and a very special Niece: Madison Harper.
Matthew was an active member of ROTC and had aspired to join the United States Army after graduating high school. He was a 2016 graduate of Chatham High School. He loved the Red, White, and Blue and his biggest dream was to have had the privilege to serve his country. Due to the an automobile accident that left him in a wheelchair for some time he was not immediately able to join the military. He did however, walk again, being the fighter he was, he refused to be in a wheelchair on his graduation day. He was very proud that despite the odds against him, he walked across the stage to receive his diploma. His parents speak of him as a "good kid", one who didn't cause them any trouble, but instead, a young man who had a heart of gold. He was kind, full of love and respect for all of humanity and always willing to lend an helping hand to anyone in need. He enjoyed a good Nascar race, playing video games, hanging out with his friends, reading anything and everything, writing short stories and poetry, and cooking...especially WAFFLES, which were his all time favorite food. Matthew was just an all American boy, with a big heart and big dreams that were so tragically cut short, but he will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him
