John Charles Coley

Dunn, NC Mr. John Charles Coley, age 91, of Dunn died Monday Evening, June 1, 2015 at his home. A native of Rocky Mount, NC, he was born March 3, 1924 the son of the late Charles Bolton Coley of Rocky Mount and & Tellie Culpepper Coley of Rocky Mount. Mr. Coley served proudly under General Patton, during World War II. He was a Forward Artiliary Director with the 551st AAA AW Battalion in the U.S. Army. Upon returning home, Mr, Coley briefly worked for the railroad. However, he found his calling at Carolina Telephone & Telegraph where he worked for 39 years. He often recalled his first job as a Lineman with pride and passion. He retired as a Division Traffic Manager in New Bern, NC. Upon retiring, Mr, Coley moved to Dunn with his wife, Myrtice. He enjoyed many days in their gardens; taking care of his prized Koi Ponds and caring for their cats, Blackie & Sweet Pea. He was devout Christian with tremendous faith, active in his church as well as many Civic Organizations. He taught Sunday School for over forty years; was an International and State Member of the Lion’s Club for 60 years serving as District Governor; a Noble Shriner since 1959 and a Master Mason since 1947. He was a lifetime member of the Republican Presidential Task Force. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 7, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Hood Memorial Christian Church with the Rev. Torrie Osgood officiating. Visitation will follow. He is survived by: His wife of 47 years: Myrtice Edwards Coley of the home. A Sons: Steven Hawley & (wife) Elaine of Lincolnton, NC Ronald F. Hawley & (wife) Angela of Goldsboro, NC Lee Edwards Hawley & (wife) Christine of Greenville, NC A Daughter: Cherry Hawley Stanley & (husband) Eddie of Benson, NC Grandchildren: Tasha, Cindy, Jessica, Christina, Ana, Jenny, Kendall, Ciara, Catherine, Joshua, Daniel & Matthew as well as 10 Great Grandchildren.
