Doris Starling

Doris was born on October 30, 1922, to the late Rassie and Lula Jackson Naylor on a farm in Sampson County, North Carolina. She was the seventh of eight children.

As a teenager, she came to faith in Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at Robert’s Grove Baptist Church. She always sought to live worthy of this great gift of salvation.

In 1942, Doris married G. Meredith Starling in Dillon, South Carolina. They then made their home in Wade, where they enjoyed 63 years together.

Jesus blessed Doris with the practical gift of service. She dedicated all of her time to her husband, her family, the community, and her home church, Bluff Presbyterian, where she served as a Deacon and Elder. She enjoyed being an active member of the Women of the Church, Circle #1, and VBS.

She found peace tending to her large vegetable garden and loved cooking homemade meals for family gatherings. She was a true matriarch of the family and a pillar of the community; her legacy will always be remembered and cherished.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings.

She is survived by her four children: Elizabeth (Robert) Warren of Eastover, NC; Emily (Sam) Colvin of Ankeny, IA; Harriet (Terry) Stewart of Wade; Carey (Janie) Starling of Richmond, VA.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Janet (John) Wright, Bob (Janan) Warren, Amy (Jonathan) Schultz, Heather (Justin) Denman, Justin (Megan) Stewart, Hunter Stewart, Meredith (Yanhao) Lin, Lindsey (Jeremy) Parenti, and Tyler (Becca) Starling.

We are proud that Doris’ legacy includes 11 great-grandchildren and one precious great-great-granddaughter.

The family gives special thanks to Norma, Denise, Danette, and Patricia for their friendship and loving care of Doris over the last four years.

She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, community, and the many others she impacted during her time here with us.
