Norm Gibson, 75, of Dunedin, FL passed away March 29, 2011 at home with his family at his side following a following a brief battle with cancer.
Norm was born in Chicago, IL to Daniel and Catherine Gibson and grew up on the south side of Chicago in the Roseland area. He joined the Air Force in 1953 and served proudly for 4 years. After leaving the service he married the love of his life, Sandra Fehsel Gibson, and joined the Dolton, IL police force. He also started his family, having his son Kurt and daughter Kristie while living in Dolton. Norm then joined the Chicago Police Department, working in patrol, gang intelligence and was a member of the sharpshooter squad. He added to his family having Keith, Leslie and Guy and the need for a nine passenger station wagon.
In 1970, after working six Chicago riots in 4 years, Norm decided to move his family to Appleton, Wisconsin and continued his law enforcement career with the Appleton Police Department. He progressed through the ranks in Appleton and retired from the Appleton PD as Deputy Chief of Police in 1991.
After retiring, Sandy and Norm relocated to Dunedin, FL and spent the summers “Up North” at Chute Pond and later at Post Lake near Elcho, WI. Norm took up golf in Florida, carding two hole-in-ones, renewed his passion for fishing and loved spending time with his grandchildren, cheering at their sporting events and attending high school and college graduations. Norm enjoyed a good joke, a cold beer and the company of his friends and family. He will be sorely missed and always remembered as a true friend and loving father, grandfather and husband.
Norm Gibson was preceded by his beloved wife Sandy of 47 years, sister Patricia, brother-in- law Tom and his parents. He is survived by his children Kurt, Kristie, Keith, Leslie and Guy. Grandchildren Chase and Taylor (Kurt and KayC Jones Gibson), Tricia (Kristie Gibson), Justine and Samantha (Keith and Annemarie Lascell Gibson), Hailee and Hunter (Leslie Gibson Paul and Jerry Paul) and Autumn and Gage (Guy and Karen Schirack Gibson). Uncle to 4 nephews and a niece.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 8, 2011 at St. Andrews Church, 705 Michigan Blvd., Dunedin, FL 34698 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a celebration of Norm’s life at the St. Andrews Fellowship Center.
