Mr. Yeckel passed away Sunday November 28, 2010 at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital, St. Petersburg, Florida. He was born April 12, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of George W. and Rose Anna Barringer Yeckel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Mrs. Virginia Stoughton, Mrs. Rose Wiseman and Mrs. Ann Erskine; brothers, George Yeckel and Charles Yeckel; also his former wife Mitzi Vrable. He is survived by sisters, Mrs. Mildred Kemble of Youngstown, Mrs. Delores Ferguson of Austintown and a brother Robert Yeckel of Austintown.
Mr. Yeckel enlisted in the Army February 3, 1942 at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. He was an infantry private serving with an armored battalion when he was captured by German forces December 11, 1944 and held in German Camp #062 until he was repatriated July 25, 1945.
Lee, as he was known to friends and family worked as a clerk for Republic Steel in Youngstown, Ohio. After retirement he moved to Dunedin, Florida where he shared the remainder of his life with longtime companion Maggie Barton of Palm Harbor.
Arrangements are being made by Moss Feaster Funeral Home in Dunedin, Florida. He will then be interred at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio where he will receive full military honors.
