"Don" was a happy loving man of great intellectual curiosity. He was an avid reader and traveler, climbing the Mayan ruins in several countries, riding a camel through the desert to the pyramids of Egypt, and exploring via air, land and sea the cultures of Central America, the Middle East, and Europe with his best friend in life and marriage, Sheila.
Side by side, they thoroughly enjoyed the beaches of Florida, bicycling the Pinellas Trail, and playing bridge with their many friends in Florida as well as being frequent visitors to New York State where they enjoyed Melody Lake in the summers.
A veteran of the United States Army, Don was an active member of the Florida Suncoast Dixieland Society, a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and a member of the deaf and hearing impaired community.
A graduate of Union College and New York University, Don worked in the financial field in his 35 years of employment at IBM, and then continued his studies and received certification as a Certified Financial Planner in his later years, helping friends and colleagues with their financial planning in retirement.
He is surviving by his loving wife of 55 years, Sheila Meehan McSweeney, his sister Gail Vincent of Tennessee, his children Brian (Kimberly) McSweeney, Erin (Dean) Bettinger, and Taryn (John) Potts in addition to his grandchildren Colleen, Laurie, Mackenzie, Cormac, Avery, Colby, Griffith and nephew Chris.
Don was a quiet man of great love and acceptance to all. He was a wonderful husband, attentive father and adored grandfather. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
Calling hours are at Moss Feaster Funeral Home on Saturday 10-11 am, and a funeral Mass will be said at Our Lady of Lourdes at 11:30
