Art was a Dunedin resident who passed away February 5, 2014, at home. He was born January 24, 1947, in White Plains, NY; attended first and second grades in Virginia; and moved to Florida in 1955.
Art was awarded a St. Petersburg Times Poynter Fund Scholarship in 1964 and received his Ph.D. from Florida State University in 1972. He taught and served as an administrator in the Florida college system, including five years as a provost at Pasco-Hernando Community College. Art served as president of the Florida Communication Association and as chairman of the Florida Community College Council of Student Affairs. His academic publications included articles which appeared in the Journal of Broadcasting, Journal of Black Studies, and Community College Review.
He later owned and operated a State Farm insurance agency in Tarpon Springs. For over thirty years, Art taught faith formation classes to teen-agers in the various parishes to which he belonged, and he gave drug and alcohol awareness presentations to over one-hundred groups and schools throughout Florida. He volunteered as a tutor at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Dunedin upon retirement.
Art requested that his obituary express love and appreciation for his greatest joys in life who survive him: wife Mary Louise, brother Gary (Jeanne), daughters Taylor (Brian) and Paige (Chris), as well as grandchildren Chloe, Logan, Todd, and Mason.
