Mom was born in Chelmno Poland to German parents and immigrated to Canada via the Church in 1951 after World War II ended. She crossed the Atlantic by boat in her 20s with her parents and brother and took a train to Winnipeg Manitoba where they started a new life. Soon after, she moved to Ontario where job prospects were good. She met her husband Wilhelm (Bill) and they settled in Hamilton.
Mom had a keen sense for business and real estate. She worked tirelessly until her early 80's and she would be thrilled to know that her hard work benefited her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an accomplished pianist, often playing for her church (Mission Baptist) where she was one of the longest members for 60 years.
Like all mom's, she had her own special recipes that we would look forward to at family gatherings; Rouladen, Chicken and Rice, Apple Pancakes and her amazing Chocolate Coffee Cake which was a staple at every birthday. We will continue the tradition of these special meals and will always think of her when we are having them.
Mom moved to St. Joseph's Villa in 2018 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She had a lovely room that overlooked trees and we would often see deer passing by while visiting her. She was affectionately known as Winnie at the Villa and we would like to thank all of the staff for their compassion and care throughout her stay.
Sadly mom passed away at the Villa on December 6, 2023. She was 93 and overcame many struggles to make the best life possible for her family. We will be eternally thankful for all that she did.
She will be remembered by her children Werner, Janet (Manel), grandchildren Marc, Daniel, Grant, Cheri, great grandchildren Mackenzie, Eva, Jackson, Olivia, nephews Gordon and Charles Hohensee and her niece Christine Dreger.
Mom is predeceased by her parents Mathylde and Erdmann Hohensee, her husband Wilhelm, daughter Ingrid (Dave) and brother Richard (Inge) Hohensee.
Visitation will be held at Marlatt Funeral Home, Swackhamer Chapel (905-627-7452), 195 King Street West, Dundas, On on Saturday December 9 from 11 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel at 12:00 p.m.. Interment at White Chapel Memorial Gardens to follow.
Rest in peace mom, in God's loving care. We love you.
