He was born in Dalhousie, India and grew up in Kashmir before his family moved to England. There he completed his secondary schooling at Bradfield College, Berkshire, and finished it with a Master's degree in Physics from Clare’s College, Cambridge. His professional life began with Rolls Royce, where he worked on the UK's first nuclear submarine. In 1963 he moved with his own young family to the United States, where he spent six years working as a research physicist at the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute (IITRI).
He came to Canada in 1969 where he worked until his retirement at the Centre for Research in Experimental Space Science (CRESS) at York University, becoming an expert in the field of synthetic spectroscopy. While there, he became a very active member of the York University Outing Club, enthusiastically developing his long-standing love of the outdoors. He pursued his love of canoeing and hiking into his retirement, moving to a home in the Haliburton Highlands.
Mark will be remembered for his love of nature, books, and good food, as well as for his generosity and gentlemanly manner. He will be missed by his children Rebecca (Janis Barlow), Mark, and Alexander, and his grandson Hugh.
The family would like to thank Dr. Patel and her team at the McMaster Family Practice, Dr. Kavanagh of Lincoln Medical Centre and the staff at The Jacob Senior Living, Beamsville, and Carrington Place, Ancaster, for their care of Mark in recent years.
