Ilse was born in Koblenz, Germany in 1921, a middle child between her two brothers Helmut, and Erwin. After the war, she married a tall German-Canadian boy, Hermann Stöver, and started visiting Canada in 1950, working in the Toronto Western Hospital for two years to get a sense of life in Canada. Family commitments kept Ilse and Hermann in Germany. There, they raised two sons, and Ilse worked as an english and math teacher in elementary and middle schools. She loved her family, in particular her four grand-children and beloved sister-in-law Friedel († Nov. 25, 1996) who lived in Toronto.
Ilse and Hermann treasured family trips on weekends and during longer holidays, travelling extensively when their children were young as well as in retirement, through Europe, Russia, the US, the Caribbean, and Africa.
She was an avid skier, hiker and in her early years, rower. Until her final years she was a faithful participant in bi-weekly gym classes. She was a life-long subscriber to the Koblenz Opera House.
Ilse was a keen friend and support to many, and in turn had many dear friends who loved and helped her when needed. Afternoon coffee at her home meant warm conversations and her superb baked cakes and cookies.
Ilse is predeceased by her husband Hermann († May 31, 1992). She is survived by her sons, Gerrit (Gabriele; with grandchildren Alina and Tobias, in Seeheim, Germany) and Harald (Maria; with grandchildren Andreas and Sophia, in Dundas, Ontario).
