I had the great fortune and joy of being a history teacher with the Hamilton Board of Education for 33 years. Besides discussing with students the “big ideas” and how our experiences from the past have given us understanding of the present, I also taught, for 22 years, a course on World Religions, exploring the best insights from both eastern, native and western philosophies. The History Department also offered courses in Politics, Economics, and introductions to anthropology, psychology, and sociology. What a varied and satisfying professional life!
I leave behind my beautiful wife Christa, whom I have loved for 50+ years and who gave me two handsome and successful sons. Nicolai, with his wife Holly, and grandchildren Iliana and Nathan; and Marcus and his wife Sarah. I would like to give special recognition to my sister Christine Gerth (Gary) for all the support she gave me over the last six years. I also leave behind my nephews Michael Cole and Peter Cole (Tricia) and their children Mia and Ian.
Great honour to my parents Max and Margarete, who worked hard and suffered greatly as immigrants from Germany, arriving in Halifax, pier 21 on Christmas Eve, 1951.
I enjoyed friendships of many groups: Thursday night basketball for 30 years, Old Timers soccer, tennis in Dundas, the canoe buddies, the poker 8, and the “coffee” friends.
I would like to thank Drs. Days, Mukherjee and Brandt Vegas and especially Dr. Anna Emili for so much care, professional advice and kindness to the end.
Now I am “beyond the western gate”
“For I have felt a presence…
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns…”
(from Wordsworth’s “Tintern Abbey”)
