Born in Vienna, Austria in 1925, he grew up in the 1920’s and ‘30’s, and endured the horrors of the Second World War and the scarcities of the post war period in Europe in the late 1940’s. He and his wife Elfriede moved to Canada for a better life in the early 1950’s.
Franz is predeceased by his wife Elfriede, and predeceased by his sister Hermine.
He leaves two sons Frank (Gayle) Zaunscherb and Eric (Helen) Lee-Zaunscherb, four grandchildren Frank (Whitney) Zaunscherb, Karen (Sean) Thomson, Ethan Zaunscherb and Samantha (Kelly) Lee-Zaunscherb, two step-grandsons Kyle (Kyra) Sutherland and Ben (Emily) Eves-Sutherland, and a niece Hannelore TenBrinke, and her family.
Franz is predeceased by his partner Erna.
As Franz eloquently said at his 90th Birthday celebration, he was deeply grateful for the many opportunities living in Canada afforded him and his family.
The family wishes to express appreciation to staff at Macassa Lodge for their patience, empathy and care.
There will be no public service, although a celebration of life will take place at some time in the future.
