Born in Rochester, NY on January 11, 1931 to Anna Mackey Powers and John Julius Powers, Joan married GW (“Wally”) Huntley in 1951 and moved to Texas to start a new life and raise a family. She graduated from John Marshall High School in Rochester, attended St. Lawrence University, and graduated from The University of North Texas. Joan taught kindergarten and first grade at TL Marsalis and Stemmons Elementary schools in Dallas for 25 years. She was a beloved teacher, recognized for her excellence, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, twice elected its president.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Wally, and infant daughter, Sally Anne. She is survived by her daughter, Sue Bach and husband Matt Bach; son Scott Huntley and wife Colleen; as well as grandchildren Laura Bach, Lizzie Bach, Meredith Elrich, and Miranda Huntley. Joan is also survived by her devoted extended family of nieces and nephews; Mike and Sandy Powers, Jack and Lori Powers, Doug and Deb Powers, Barb and Tim Trombitas, Jim and Sharon Frampton, Nancy Frampton, and Jack Frampton.
Joan was a person of strong faith who was active in the Presbyterian Church. She was a founding member and deacon of Glendale Presbyterian Church in Oak Cliff and served as a deacon at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church, where she was cherished by her fellow parishioners. Although Joan will be missed by all, those who knew and loved her believe that she lived a full and meaningful life and is now being comforted in the fullness of God’s Grace.
Joan’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church at 1220 W Belt Line Rd, Richardson, TX 75080 at 3:00pm on Saturday, October 19, 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, or the charity of your choice.
