It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marjorie Ruest at Cowichan District Hospital, holding the hands of her daughters. Born in Vancouver, BC, Marj was the youngest of ten children. She grew up during the Depression and WW2, writing to each of her five older brothers and one sister as they all served in the Canadian military. Our family lived in Sidney for many years where Mom worked for BC Ferries and enjoyed the many friends she made over the years. Dad and Mom moved to Chemainus in 1993 and truly loved the “little town.”
Mom lived a full life that included love, laughter and countless displays of affection and generosity – her hugs are legendary! Mom’s passing is deeply felt by her surviving family including her husband Charlie, her daughters Janet (Jim), Lise, son Chuck, grandchildren Elizabeth, Robert, Taylor and Devon.
Mom’s passing has created a tremendous hole in the hearts of her family and friends. It is comforting to know that she was able to enjoy being a “snowbird” with Dad for over twenty years. They loved the great Arizona weather, and their “winter” activities – especially bingo! She was caring, compassionate and always had a warm smile, big hugs and words of encouragement. Mom always put others ahead of herself and was one of the most resilient people on earth. Mom always told us how she felt about us, and we her… nothing was left unsaid. Mom was the rock of our family and the glue that held it together. She supported us in all our endeavours and proudly talked about her children to anyone who would listen.
Thank you for the kindness and compassion of her health care workers, especially, Emma, Tracey, Sandy, Jay, and Shirley (cook). Drs. Manhas and Pedro showed compassion, understanding and gave comfort to all of us. We also appreciate the kindness of the front office staff at Chemainus Medical clinic. Nurses Christine, Katie and Avrill at CDH were tremendously caring and reassuring in the very short time that Mom was in their care. Mom always believed in angels and now she is amongst them. At Mom’s request, a private family celebration will be held. Donations may be made to Chemainus Health Care Foundation. http://chemainushealthcarefoundation.ca/page-2/
