John Sterry Mitchell McDonell

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that John passed away at the Cowichan District Hospital on January 24, 2024 with his family at his side.

John is predeceased by his father Rod McDonell and sister Marion Flatt. John is survived by his mother Shirley McDonell, sisters Delta (Randy) September (Donn), Carol (Bert) and brother Donell. He was well loved by a large extended family including many nieces and nephews and those who called him ‘uncle’ by choice.

John (Johnny Mac to his many friends) was a guy who lived life to the fullest. Commercial fisherman, pile driver, heavy machine operator and much more. He loved trucks, boats, Harleys and organizing parties. Lots of people around Cowichan Bay will remember some of the Scorpio birthday bashes and summer floating parties that John pulled together. John was also an adventurous traveler, his last trip a bucket list motorcycle tour through Mexico and Guatemala.

There will be no service by request but there will be a party in John’s honour in early August. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to BC Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Doctor Wenzel-Smith for her care and kindness to John and his family.
