Tony was born and grew up in Palo Alto, California. He married his high school sweetheart, Laura Wilson, in 1952 and served four years in the U.S. Navy. He attended Stanford University where he earned his BA, Masters, and PhD degrees.
Tony taught Anthropology at the Univ. of Calif. in Santa Barbara for two years before moving with his wife and three children to Canada, where he taught in the Faculties of Anthropology and of Education at the Univ. of Alberta in Edmonton. During his 30 year career at the U. of A. Tony was active in university governance and was committed to working with First Nations students, organizations, and communities.
Tony has always loved cars and in 1977 he became involved with the Northern Alberta Sports Car Club. He initially helped with inspecting race cars for safety requirements before they were allowed on the track. After a few years he and his pal Bob Cohoon formed the Mad Dog Racing team with Tony as driver. He raced both on dry tracks and on the ice, and loved every minute of it.
In 1998 Laura and Tony retired to Vancouver Island, where Tony enjoyed many years of playing golf and swimming with the Aquannis Masters swimmers. Tony is survived by his wife Laura, his daughters Kathy Rennick (Barrie), Vicky Couteret (Randy), and son Matt Fisher (Debbie); three grandchildren Ben Couteret (Laurie), Linden Couteret (Kyle Doiron), and Alban Fisher, and two great grandchildren Oliver and Felix Couteret. A celebration of his life will be held later this year.
