Phyllis was born in Duluth on March 10, 1927 to Hugo and Nita (Chute) Hoch. She graduated from Central High School in 1945 and attended UMD. Phyllis met James Spencer and they were married on May 26, 1951. Phyllis held a loving focus on her family. She adored the time that she spent with her children and grandchildren and would always keep track of their many activities and adventures. She enjoyed cooking and baking as well as sewing. Phyllis had an incredible sense of humor and optimism even through difficult times. She was quick with a joke and always kept a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James; 3 brothers, Robert, Donald and Richard and sister, Jean.
Phyllis is survived by son, Tim (Katie) of White Bear Lake, MN; Cindi (Kurt) Ulrich of Champlin, MN; grandchildren, Bob and Elizabeth Spencer, Angela and Megan Ulrich; two sisters, Mary “Lode” Cochrane of Stillwater, MN, Frances (Ed) Peterson of Benton Harbor, MI; her loving dog, Caper as well as many other family members and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Paul Sanford and Dr. Joseph Martinelli and staff as well as the loving and dedicated caregivers at Regency Home Health Care.
Memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Bell Brothers Jarvi Dowd Funeral Home 925 East Fourth St. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the St. Luke’s Foundation 1000 East First Street, Suite 102 Duluth, MN 55805-2193.
