Lorraine P Hanson, 92 years old, of Culver, passed away peacefully Dec. 4, 2015 at the Interfaith Care Center in Carlton. She was born to Lorain and Albert Otto in Superior, on May 23, 1923. Lorraine spent her youth in South Range, with her two younger sisters Betty and Anita. Along with her sisters she attended East High School in Superior.
Lorraine married A. C. “Neil” Hanson in 1949 and they began their married life in Proctor, that year. In addition to caring for their two sons, Paul and Neil Anthony Hanson, she was very active in the civic life of the Village of Proctor as a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernia’s (an Irish Catholic women’s social club), the Proctor Moose Lodge 1302 and the Proctor American Legion Auxiliary where she twice served as Ladies Commandant. While her son Paul was enrolled in St. Rose of Lima Elementary School in Proctor, Lorraine, along with her mother-in-law Margaret Hanson, often served as a substitute teacher for the Schools First Grade class. In the mid 1960’s and early 1970’s Lorraine worked at the First National Bank of Proctor where she came to know virtually every adult member of the Proctor Community
Lorraine and her husband Neil purchased a summer cabin on Lake Aerie in Alborn Township in 1963 and spent summers there until building a permanent residence at nearby Crooked Lake. She and Neil hosted their grandchildren, Nathan and Jessica, every summer at the lake. It was while living year around at Crooked Lake that Lorraine became the Alborn Town Clerk, a post she served in for ten years.
After the death of her husband Neil, Lorraine met the second great love of her life: Richard “Hap” Johnson of Culver. Both being retired, Lorraine and Hap spent winters in Lake Havasu City and later at their beloved condo overlooking the Gulf Of Mexico in Cape Coral, summers she and Hap travelled, fished the lakes of MN and Canada and gardened on Hap’s farmstead in Culver.
Lorraine thought of Hap’s sons and daughters and grandchildren as though they were her own. Lorraine and Hap spent 25 years together and Hap visited her daily at the Interfaith Care Center.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents and sisters and her husband Arthur C Hanson, her son Neil Anthony Hanson and her grandson Nathan B Hanson.
She is survived by her son Paul Hanson, granddaughter Jessica Lee Vittur (David Vittur) and great grandsons Nathan, Levi and Trent Vittur; as well as the extended members of the Johnson Family.
Visitation will be at Noon with the Funeral Service to follow at 1pm, Saturday, Dec. 12th at Bell Brothers Funeral Home. Interment will be at Oneota Cemetery in West Duluth.
