Larry was born November 21, 1939 to parents, Rudolph and Mildred Johnson. He was a 1957 graduate of Duluth Cathedral High School, where he played varsity football. He attended UMD, earning a B.A. degree in both Business Administration and Accounting. He also participated in ROTC.
Larry started his employment in the family business, Rudy’s Cozy Corner in West Duluth. He later was employed by West End Iron Metal, Zenith Cement Block, Arrowhead Fireworks and Duluth Avionics. He retired from the Duluth Airport Authority, after 29 years as Director of Finance. For over 50 years, he owned and operated Johnson Trees on Grand Ave.
He was involved with Junior Achievement and was a lifetime member of United Northern Sportsman and the NRA. He also enjoyed trapshooting at Jack Meade and Deloia’s Gun Club.
Larry was an avid outdoorsman, deer hunting being his first love. He succeeded his father “the Gnome” as leader of the Maple Lake Deer Hunting Camp. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, duck hunting, and most importantly, spending time at Maple Leaf Lake.
He was a long time UMD hockey season ticket holder and an avid Vikings and Twins fan.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; nephews, Robert and Jonathan.
He is survived by his fiancé, Debbi Paaso; daughters, Lori, Linda (Charles), Lisa; sons, Lawrence “Butch” (Kerry), Lance (Angela), Leonard (Melanie); grandchildren, Hailey, Mackenzie, Logan, Jacob, Ian, Sophie, Mason, Lily, Siena, Adriana; brother, Robert (Virginia); sister, Ginger; friend and former wife, Joanie; many nieces; nephews; friends; and beloved pets.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Sunday, June 3, 2012 in Bell Brothers Funeral Home, 601 N 56th Ave W, in Duluth with Prayer Service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, June 4, in St. James Catholic Church, 721 N 57th Ave W, in Duluth.
