She was born in Duluth, Minnesota and has remained a life-long resident. After graduating from East High School, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, as well as a Master’s in Business Administration, both from the University of MN, Duluth. While completing her undergraduate degree, she was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. As a local CPA, she has owned and operated Karen E. Habert, CPA for the past 33 years.
She was a life-long member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, were she was an active member of the choir and various church functions. With a passion for music, she was also involved in the John Duss Choral Society, Duluth Symphony Chorus, as well as sang at countless weddings and funerals. She has served as the Treasurer of the Presbytery of Northern Waters, and was also a member of the Port of Duluth Kiwanis Club, PEO Sisterhood, West End Business and Civic Association (WEBCA), the West Duluth Business Association, Duluth Chamber of Commerce, and the MN CPA Society. In her spare time, Karen enjoyed volunteering her time and skills throughout the community, camping, boating, golfing, and spending time with friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, William Habert, in 1997, her father, Gerhard von Glahn, in 1997, and mother, Dorothy von Glahn, in 1993.
She is survived by her three children Rebecca (Michael) Pierce of Duluth, Laura (Brandon) Thorsvik of Hermantown, and Wendy (Otis) Habert of Colorado Springs, CO. She is also survived by her brother, Peter (Clara) von Glahn of Wilmington, DE. Karen had five grandsons, one granddaughter, and a beloved pet, Max.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at 1:00 pm at Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, 2105 Woodland Ave, Duluth, MN, 55803.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Glen Avon Presbyterian Church Music Fund.
