Dear Betty, Maren, Nancy and  families,

We have all lost a grand lady.  Gil and Doris, who were affectionately known in our neighborhood as the Mayor and Mrs. Mayor of Bruce St., were our dear friends and neighbors for more than 45 years.  Their home was full of love, laughter, music and delicious baked goods.

Doris was one of the kindest, loving and most gracious people we have known. Her fondness for the neighborhood children and dogs was legendary.  After the epic snowstorm of 1991 when we had finally shoveled a small path and helped dig out Gil and Doris, our dogs Sam and Boulder made a beeline for Doris' front porch where she rewarded them with her customary dog treats.

When their youngest, Nancy, was still at home, they had a sheepdog, Maggie, and Gil would take Maggie out trick or treating on Halloween while Doris dished out treats to the neighborhood.  It was a great partnership and when Gil passed away, Doris showed her brave side by staying on in their lovely home at 23 Bruce for many years.

It was a mutual love between Doris and her family.  We know how much you will miss her and we will also.

So sad to read about your mother's passing. She was so kind and my mothers and father's best of friends. I'll always fondly remember the summer cook-outs in the backyard of Bruce Street followed by Gil playing on the organ in the front room. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

We remember Doris well since she sat at the dining table with my mother, Aggie Berglund, at Lakeshore. She was always a presence at the table and on the same floor as Aggie in Assisted Living. At the beginning, she struggled hard to remember who we were and how we were related to Aggie but I think she remembered that my husband was her doctor in some years' past. Doris will be missed by her family and her friends and, I'm sure, by the Lakeshore staff. Our condolences to her family.
