Donald was raised in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School. After high school he went to Dunwoody, where he achieved his degree as a machinist. Donald went on to work at Oliver mining in the research lab for many years and was a part of the team that developed the first taconite pellets.
Donald was drafted in the Army as a machinist for 2 years. In 1959 he married the love of his life Lillian Anderson at Elim Lutheran Church in Duluth and they were happily married for 42 years. Donald retired in 1993 from Moline Machinery after working with them for over 30 years.
He loved spending time trout fishing and he especially enjoyed fishing on the Baptism River. Donald was also known as a handy man and he always enjoyed tackling new projects at home.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; sister, Marlene Royseth; and brother, Duane Gunderson.
He will be greatly missed by his two sons, Bruce (Kathryn) Gunderson of Hermantown and Brian Gunderson of Duluth; 3 grandchildren, Keith (Stephanie) Gunderson, Kristi Gunderson, and Jamie Osborn; sister, Diane (Donnie) Thompson; sister-in-law, Gail Gunderson; brother-in-law, Herman Royseth; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Bell Brothers Funeral Home. Visitation will continue from 10:00 until the 11:00 Funeral Service Friday, April 3, 2015 at Elim Lutheran Church.Interment will be in Oneota Cemetery.
