Carol was born in Grand Marais, Minnesota on October 2, 1919 to Christian West and Cecelia (Toftey) West. After growing up in the Tofte area Carol attended the Duluth State Teachers College and graduated in 1939. She was united in marriage to Francis J. “Bud” Smith. Later she attended UMD and graduated in 1965 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Carol worked for many years as a teacher for the Cook County School District in Tofte as well as the Saw Tooth Mountain Elementary School in Grand Marais. She retired in 1980 and moved with her husband to Duluth. Faith played a large role in Carol’s life. She was a devoted member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor as well as its Ruth Circle. She was a former member of the Eastern Star, past president of the Grand Marais Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, and secretary of the Railview Action Club. Carol enjoyed reading as well as traveling with her husband.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis, and two sisters, Irma Fatherree and Christine Davis.
Carol is survived by Jeanette C. Smith of Las Cruces, NM and Joanne C. Gerber of Proctor; 2 grandsons, Joseph M. Gerber of Las Cruces, NM and David M. Gerber of Minneapolis, MN, as well as many other family members and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 27, 2-4 P.M. at Bell Brothers Funeral Home 601 N. 56th Ave.W. Funeral service will be held at 1 P.M. on Monday, February 28, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church 701 N. 3rd Ave. Proctor, MN. Interment will be in Oneota Cemetery.
