James “Jim” Davakis, DDS, passed away on September 1, 2023. Jim was born on January 6, 1927 in Youngstown, Ohio. Born to Greek immigrant parents, he quickly adopted the tough, hardworking personality of his hometown. After graduating from South High School, he worked in the Youngstown steel mills. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he served in Germany as a member of the military police. After his discharge, he became the first in his family to attend college. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Kent State University, followed by his DDS degree from Case Western Reserve. During this time, he met the love of his life, Sylvia Boyazis. They married in 1950 and raised three children in Poland, Ohio. Jim practiced dentistry in Youngstown for 33 years. He had a lifelong passion for woodworking and carpentry, and created countless beautiful pieces for his family and friends, in addition to building two homes. After retirement, Jim and Sylvia relocated to Clearwater/St. Pete, Florida, where they spent 29 great years. They returned to Ohio in 2016, to be near their children.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his four siblings, and his son-in-law, David Barshel. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 73 years, Sylvia, and his children, Karen Barshel of Dublin, Dr. Nicholas (Lani) Davakis of Upper Arlington, and Dr. Stephen (Michelle) Davakis of Dublin. He also leaves nine grandchildren and one great grandson.
Jim was an incredibly intelligent, strong, and amazing man. Above all, he was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy will live on in his children and grandchildren. Jim was truly a shining example of the Greatest Generation.
Funeral services will take place on Thursday, September 7 at 11:00am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N. High St., Columbus, with burial to follow at Union Cemetery. Friends may call immediately prior to services, beginning at 10:00am at the cathedral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Jim’s memory. The family also wishes to thank the staff at Brookdale Muirfield and Caretenders Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care.
