Born on December 2, 1929, in Louisville, Kentucky to John and Mary McAdam, she was the oldest of five children. She graduated from Nazareth College with a degree in Chemistry, and later went on to get a teaching certificate. Helen married William Thornton from New Albany, Indiana, in 1952. They had five children, moved to Wilmington, Ohio in 1962, and then to Columbus in 1967.
Helen was a teacher and spent most of her career at Gahanna Middle School East. After retiring, she enjoyed volunteer work, spending time with her grandchildren, and traveling with her husband and family.
Helen spent more than a decade living at the Dublin Retirement Village where she enjoyed playing bingo and socializing. She had a great sense of humor and was known to be a character.
She is preceded in death by Bill, her husband of 48 years, her daughter-in-law Krista, and grandson, Danny. She will be missed by her children: Mary Beth Fogg, Cathy (Tim) Earlenbaugh, Joan Thornton (J.R. Berroyer), Jack (Krista) Thornton and Julie Thornton. Helen will also be missed by her grandchildren: Ellen (Kyle) Klein, Ted Sammet, Kelly (Cody) Woodard, and Anthony and Angel Thornton, as well as her great-grandchildren Cooper and Hadlee Woodard and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends Sunday, August 20, 2023 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER DUBLIN, 5980 Perimeter Dr. Dublin, OH 43017. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, August 21 at St. Brigid of Kildare Church, 7179 Avery Rd. Dublin, OH 43017, with entombment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lockbourne, OH.
