Sonia Planas was born in Santa Lucia Cuba by midwife to Carlos Aguirre and Mercedes Lopez on January 16th, 1940. She was a schoolteacher while living in Cuba and when communism took over, she and her husband baked cakes to earn a living and survive. She immigrated to the U.S. on January 15th, 1970 with her husband and two children and worked hard to earn her Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from Mount St Mary’s College in Los Angeles. Sonia worked for the County of Los Angeles in the Department of Public Social Services as an eligibility worker for 24 years until her retirement. She had a heart of gold and never met a stranger and took great joy in storytelling. She had great faith and always sacrificed her needs for the good of others, was always in good spirits and loved a good laugh with family and friends. She enjoyed cooking and especially baking and watching her favorite travel shows.
Sonia is survived by her son Rogelio C. Planas (Diana), daughter Mercedes A. Roberts (Charles), and sister Daisy Ferrer. Her grandchildren include Jennifer Lopez (Rudy), Bradley Planas, Jessica Planas, William Roberts, and Tyler Roberts. Her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life, her passion for living, and her zest for life will live on through them.
