Don lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his community. Don served honorably in the Navy during the Vietnam Era completing two terms aboard the USS Arlington, the USS Wright, and the USS Princeton. During his time in the military he received a National Defense Service Medal and a Vietnam Service Medal. His time in the military was a testament to his commitment and resilience which carried over into his civilian life.
Following his military service Don pursued a career for 40 years as an electrician with Atlantic Richfield, Arco, and BP Petroleum. His work ethic and expertise were highly regarded by his colleagues.
Don was an avid golfer and bowler. He belonged to several bowling leagues and he even has a 300 ring for his perfect game. He belonged to Lakewood Seniors Golf Club and Navy Men's Club. While bowling and golf were among his favorite sports, Don enjoyed a game of cribbage or dominoes with friends. He was a quiet intelligent guy who spent a lot of time in his final years visiting with friends and family and engaging in a competitive game of cribbage, either one-on-one or with partners. He was a fierce competitor that could count everyone’s points quickly and was even found playing at the hospital during his final days. Spending time with family and friends brought Don his greatest joy.
His family includes his loving wife, Barbara Winkler. Jaimee (Joe) Tindull in OH, and Julie (Robert) Kromminga; Kyle (Anya) Moya, Steve Moya, Christy Moya and Lisa (Robert) Mitchell, all of Anaheim. And, two bonus daughters, Teri VerHagen of ID, and Carolyn (& Dean) Gialamas of Fullerton. He has 14 grandchildren and 5 ½ great-grandchildren. He leaves behind many other family and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Ethelrada, his sister Barbara Curto, his daughter Julie Kromminga, and his son Kyle Moya.
He was a member of Bell One Christian Reformed Church, where he participated in the church community and formed lasting friendships. A service to honor Don's life will be held at Riverside National Cemetery on Sept 23, 2024, with a memorial service at Bell One and refreshments following. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Southern California Quilts of Valor an organization close to his heart.
