John was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Doris Murtaugh, his daughter Jill C. Murtaugh and his brother Gerald Murtaugh. He is survived by his two sons John and James. He is also survived by his sister Judy Craig from Colorado, and five grandchildren and six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
John grew up on the southside of Chicago and graduated from Leo Catholic High School in 1949. John went on to serve in the U.S. Navy in the early 1950’s. John started a family in Illinois, eventually settling in Naperville, IL in the early 60’s where he and his wife Doris raised their three children. John worked as a salesman for General Motors for 30 years in the AC Delco parts division covering Northern Illinois and Indiana. John loved to talk and interact with people of all sorts and very much enjoyed stopping into the various automotive dealerships, parts distributors, and gas stations for a cup of coffee and conversation as part of his work. John was a man with an upbeat attitude and friendly demeanor. His loving parents Luke (born in Ireland) and Pearl (from Norway) instilled kind and approachable traits in John which he carried on during his life time. John loved sports of all kinds – playing and watching, and made participation of sports available to his children and encouraged his grandchildren. He especially loved the game of golf which he diligently practiced and played over his lifetime and eventually utilized this love during his retirement, working at golf courses as a starter and ranger in Northwest Illinois and Florida. John and Doris enjoyed their retirement years living in Galena, Illinois and in southeast Florida, where they resided at the Deerfield Manor Club, a place where they met many dear friends.
Funeral services have not been scheduled, as the family waits for times when these services are available in the Chicago area.
