Daniel Stewart Roy, Sr. of Villa Rica, Georgia, passed away on July 25, 2024, at the age of 87. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on September 27, 1936, Daniel dedicated his life to serving his country and community with honor and distinction.
Daniel had a distinguished military career as a military police officer in the United States Army, retiring as a Major in 1981. A Vietnam veteran, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery and service during the war. His career took him to various locations, including Germany, Hawaii, and Japan. It was during his time at Ft. Benning, Georgia, that he met the love of his life, Patricia O'Malley. They married in December 1961, beginning a loving partnership that spanned over six decades.
Following his retirement from active duty, Daniel embarked on a second career as a civilian Systems Analyst for the Army. His expertise and dedication were instrumental during Operation Desert Storm, where he played a key role in deploying mobile satellite communications to troops in the field.
Daniel was a proud alumnus of Seton Hall University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in business. He furthered his education with two Master's degrees from Georgia State University, in Finance and Computer Information Systems. His academic achievements were a testament to his commitment to lifelong learning.
A devout Catholic, Daniel was an active member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Knights of Columbus. His faith guided his actions, and he was known for his generosity and dedication to helping others. In his retirement, he volunteered several days a week at the Georgia Aquarium, sharing his love for marine life and educating visitors.
Daniel is preceded in death by his father, Howard John Roy; his mother, Josephine Morrison Roy; and his sister, Joyce Murphy.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia O'Malley Roy of Villa Rica; their five children, Richard (Charlene) of Villa Rica, Dan Jr. (Sharon) of Newnan, Patricia Roy of Atlanta, Michelle Roy of New York, and Elizabeth Roy Peak of Villa Rica. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren; Matt Roy, Kendall Roy, Danielle Black (Brett), Gabby Peak, and Isabelle Peak; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members. The family eagerly anticipates the arrival of his first great-grandchild, Ridge Daniel Black, in the coming weeks.
Daniel's life was a testament to service, love, and commitment. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of dedication and generosity will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A rosary service will be observed from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM. The funeral mass will be Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at 12:00 Noon at Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church in Canton, Georgia. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.
