Funeral Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2011 at First United Methodist Church of Dothan with Rev. Allie Freeman and Rev. Sterling Boykin officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Dan was born April 10, 1917, to John Arthur Boone, Sr. and Mittie Hamlin Boone, who died when he was two years old. He was raised by his step-mother, Lillie Rackley Boone, in the old part of Dothan called "Dixie", at 505 North Appletree Street. Dan attended Howell School, Young Junior High School and graduated from Dothan High School in 1935.
Dan worked for the US Post Office for 39 years as a letter carrier and later as a rural carrier. He saw Dothan grow from a farm town to the city it is today. He was a devoted family man.
As a young boy, Dan was a member of the old Foster St. Methodist Church which later became First Methodist Church. As a young family man he joined Lafayette St. Methodist Church where he was a charter member of the Scarborough SS Class, on the Official Board of Stewards, member of the Flairs and 1 of 2 members left in one of the first Supper Clubs of Dothan. In later life, he returned to First United Methodist Church. Dan always had a winning smile and made lots of friends during his life. He loved to tell stories of old Dothan. He was one of 2 people left in his DHS graduating class of 1935.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Kathleen Johnson Boone.
He is survived by his daughter, Sue Boone Marty (Bill) of McCalla, and son, James Arthur Boone (Jim) of Dothan; grandsons, Billy Marty (Tansley) of Tuscaloosa, Danny Marty (Melissa) of Birmingham and Bradley Boone of Atlanta, GA; great-grandchildren; Will and Emma Marty of Tuscaloosa and Cade, Lacy and Christian Marty of Birmingham; sisters-in-law, Miriam Johnson Roney (Thomas) of Scottsboro; Fredda Johnson Marsh of Springhill, TN and 17 nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be all members of the U.S. Postal Service during the years of 1945-1979. Pallbearers will be Gene McGriff, Jimmy Grant, Harry Barnhill, Dr. Wayne Prim, Harry Wayne Parrish and Dr. Mike Howell.
The family welcomes flowers or contributions to the “In Christ Name Fund” at First United Methodist Church.
