Elva Jean Thomas

Graveside Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 19, 2011 at Pilgrim Home Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Buddy Hood officiating and Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. on Monday.

Jean was born in Wellington, KS and was a graduate of Wellington High School, Class of 1952. She attended Business College in Wichita, KS; after marriage she moved to Dothan, AL where she worked in the Accounting Department of Bloomberg Department Store. In 1962, she moved to Wicksburg, AL. She worked at GTE, where she was a telephone operator until she retired.

Jean was always concerned about children with learning disabilities and was also a Master Gardener. She frequently supported the local Wicksburg Volunteer Fire Dept. She was great in her faithfulness and was a member of Pilgrim Home Baptist Church. Jean is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by many.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Owen of Wellington, KS, her husband, Robert Keith Thomas Sr. of Wicksburg, AL, and her grandson, Robert Keith Thomas, III of Ozark, AL (widow, Tracy Thomas).

Jean is survived by her sister, Avis Leigh Dennis of Enterprise, UT; her children, Robert Keith “Bobby” Thomas Jr., Luann Thomas Riopel (husband, Jim Riopel), and James Gregory “Jim” Thomas (wife, Cindy Thomas); grandchildren, Jason Newsome (Debi), Rachel Newsome (Chris), Teddy Newsome, and Jacob Thomas; a brother-in-law, Gene Thomas (Nina) of Batavia, IA; many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to the Wicksburg Volunteer Fire Department, 1888 Wicksburg Road, Newton, AL 36352.
