Born in Digby, on May 9, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Leander and Violet (Hazelton) Handspiker.
After high school she worked at the telephone office as an operator and it was at this time that she met the love of her life Frederick John Walter Bates. They married February 26, 1966 and raised three children that she would become a stay at home mother to. She opened her door and heart to care for many children over the years whereby she got her name “Nanny” Vick! She would later become Nanny to her pride and joy, her three grandsons, Kyle, Kohl and Kade.
Vickie is survived by her loving husband Fred Bates, Digby; sons Tim Bates, Corey Bates both of Digby; daughter Sheri (Brad Freake) Coldbrook; grandsons Kyle, Kohl and Kade all of Coldbrook. Also survived by sister Betty Jackson, Lunenburg.
Besides her parents, Leander and Violet, she was predeceased by brothers David, Jackie and sisters Adelia and Janet.
Vickie loved life and is now free from the awful disease that took her. She had a strong faith in God and always wanted to help those in need. Nanny we hope you are singing with the angels in heaven. We will love you for eternity.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff on the 2nd floor of the Digby General Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion for “nanny”.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Jayne’s Funeral Home.
Cremation will take place and there will be no service as per her wishes. A family gathering will take place at a later date.
Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Diabetes Association or charity of one’s choice.
“Those we love don’t go away,
they walk beside us everyday.
Unseen, unheard but always near.
Still loved, still missed and very
dear.”
