It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of our dear mother, Muriel Francis Goguen of Smith's Cove at age 82. Mom, died peacefully surrounded by her family at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax on April 28, 2018. Born September 11, 1935 in Bridgewater, she was a daughter of the late Vernon and Viola (Mailman) Oickle of Bridgewater, NS.
Our devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend had the natural ability to make everyone feel loved and important. Her infectious smile and unique laugh would light up a room and warm your heart. Whether she knew you or not, everyone was treated the same. She always said “I’ve never met a stranger”.
Muriel graduated in 1957 from Saint John General Hospital (N.B) with a Degree in Nursing. She worked with the Digby General Hospital’s Outpatient Dept for many years until her first retirement. Later, she accepted a position with the Bear River Community Health Clinic where she would complete her career at the age of 72.
She had many passions such as knitting, playing bingo and cards with Skip-Bo being her favorite. She loved spending time with her family, her best friend Leona Willman, her bingo and card buddies. In her spare time this remarkable woman was an active member the community, either as a board member or helping behind the scenes with: Digby Community Health Board, RCMP Senior Safety, Fall Prevention, Nova Scotia Diabetes Association, VON Board of Directors, Digby Hospital Auxiliary, Palliative Care Team, Relay for Life, Wharf Rat, Lobster Bash and the Senior’s Day Program to name a few.
Muriel is survived by her daughters, Gail (Robert) Driscoll, Halifax; Kathy (Billy) Ross, Digby; sons, Barry Goguen, Digby; Mike (Cindy) Goguen, Berwick; many grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Muriel was predeceased by her husband, John Phillip Goguen; sister, Barb MacKay and brother, Vernon Oickle Jr.
Our family would like to thank her neighbors and countless friends for their love and support and to Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home 2nd Floor staff for taking such good care of our mother.
A celebration of Life will be held at Digby Curling Club on Saturday May 12, 2018 with Diane Axent officiating. Everyone is welcome at 1 pm with service at 2pm followed by a reception. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in memory may be made to Digby Hospital Auxiliary or Digby Relay for Life. Leave condolences at www.jaynesfuneralhome.com
