Howard started his career in the United States Marine Corps in 1954, serving until 1957 and again from October 1961 to September 1962 as a sergeant E-5. He acted as a radio operator until his honorable discharge. One highlight of his career was climbing Mount Fuji while he served in Japan, a memory he often recalled fondly. After his military career he continued serving the public, first as a well-respected corrections officer, and then as a game warden for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. He worked as a game warden until his retirement, throughout his 20 year long career he made numerous lasting contributions in the field of ecological preservation: including helping to repopulate the endangered wood duck population. After retirement Howard and his beloved wife of 59 years, Pauline, moved to Nova Scotia. He spent his time gardening, birdwatching, making wildlife themed wood carvings and traveling with Pauline. He will be remembered as a protector of nature and the environment, as well as for his sense of humor, honesty and kindness.
Howard is survived by his wife Pauline; daughter, Paulette (David) Cooper; grandchildren, James L. Cooper, Alicia L. Aldridge, Christina L. Johnson and Caitlin Cooper; great grandchildren, Abrielle Cooper, Zakai Cooper, Rockwell Cooper and Akeeva Cooper; and his nephew, Scott Wagner. Howard is predeceased by his parents, Howard Burton and Martha (Wolter) Carpenter and his sister, Beverly Wagner.
A service for Howard will be held at the South Range Christian Church at 2pm on Saturday, September 30th presided by Pastor Josh Stevenson.
