Marie Nichols, age 86, of Freeport, NS, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2023, with family by her side at Digby General Hospital. Born March 8, 1937, in London, England, she was the only child of the late Mark and Millie Manette.
Marie lived in London before she and her parents moved to Wales during WWII. From there, they came to Canada in 1947, living briefly in New Brunswick before settling in Toronto. It was there that she met Gordon, and the two were married in 1963. Four years later, they moved finally to his hometown of Freeport.
Marie enjoyed telling stories from her childhood. She had memories of the air raid sirens in London and of a church being destroyed on her street, as well as of various adventures and antics as a teenager. She loved knitting, crocheting, and working with beads, and she made many scarves, afghans, and dish cloths over the years. She loved reading and had a vast and varied collection of books. She was also a self-admitted sore loser and confessed to overturning board games when things weren't going her way (though we think she mellowed with age).
She is survived by daughters Christina (Larry) and Susan (Jim); sons Mark, Colin, Robert, Richard, and Cecil; grandsons Christopher (Alicia), Ronnie, Daniel, and Matthew; and great-grandchildren Catalaya, Kyle, and Chauncy. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gordon. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie's memory can be made to the Freeport Baptist Church or any local food bank. There will be no visitation. All are welcome to attend a short graveside service and internment at Brookside Cemetery, Freeport on Thursday, November 30th at 1pm. with Pastor Tim Long officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Jayne's Funeral Home, Digby.
