Maloney, William “Bill” Francis, died suddenly on March 18, 2021. He was born to Francis and Jeanne (Tolson) Maloney on May 1, 1946, in Washington D.C. and grew up in the New Castle-Wilmington, Delaware area. He married the love of his life, Susan Oren on March 27th, 1982. They have one son, Andrew. Bill graduated from the University of Delaware in 1969 after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and went on to complete his Master’s degree in Business Administration in 1973. He pledged Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and enjoyed several years as a chapter advisor during his tenure at the University of Kentucky.
In 1976 Bill received his Ph. D in Business Administration from the University of Michigan. The American Society of Civil Engineers awarded him the Walter L. Huber prize for his research in Construction Workers and Their Work Environment in 1986. In 2000 he was honored with the Great Teacher Award in Construction Engineering and Management by the University of Kentucky. While at UK he held the Raymond-Shaver Chair of Engineering and Management.
Bill had a deep fondness for the University of Michigan and its football history. He was especially proud of his three-foot-high Bo Schembechler Bobblehead! Another of his joys was his time spent signing in the choir at Second Presbyterian Church of Lexington, Kentucky.
Bill is survived by his wife of 39 years, Susan, son Andy (Michele), grandsons Lukas and Jaxson, step-grandchildren Jordan and Miranda Welch, sisters Carol Wilder and Patricia Madore, step-father Louis Francescato, Cynthia Oren Bischoff, Robert (MaryJo) Oren, Matt (Pam) Oren, Anne Oren (David) Harley, and John (Jodi) Oren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. The family will gather for a private memorial service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Honor Flight, an organization dear to Bill’s heart after his five companion flights to Washington, D.C.
