Bob was born on June 24,1925 to Eva and Wilbert Vondale in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in June 1943 and joined the Army in September 1943 serving with the 5th Rangers and 79th Infantry during World War II. Bob served with distinction in the European Theater landing at Omaha Beach, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and completing his service in Germany and Czechoslovakia.
After the war he attended MSU from September 1947 to December 1950. He subsequently received his Masters Degree from MSU.
Bob’s first teaching job was in Webberville for 4 years, then 3 years in Bangor, Michigan. The next 23 years were spent working with students in the East Lansing School District. Bob was devoted to his students and enjoyed staying in touch with them and attending reunions.
Bob married his wife, Beverly, on Thanksgiving Day in 1950. They had four children, Bob, Jim, Cathy and Steve. Bob retired in 1980 and he and Beverly moved to Kerrville, Texas for 27 years. Barbershop singing, writing poetry, playing 8-ball pool, and RVing occupied much of his time in Texas.
Beverly and Bob moved back to Michigan in 2007, to be closer to their family. They were members of St. Jude’s parish in Dewitt. Bob enjoyed singing in the choir and was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus.
